Milan Trip Report Part 3: Where we ate!

Possibly my favorite thing in the world is good food, and Milan certainly has that! One of the great things about the stay.com app is the curated recommendations that you can save to your personal guide. One of the lists was the best pizzerias, and fortunately, there was a place called Sciuscia that was about 3 blocks away. Holy tastebuds, the pizza at this place! I can’t adequately describe it, just promise me you’ll go if you visit. I got the Caprissiosa, and paired it was some birra (beer), and have rarely been happier.

wifey and I about to dig in at Sciuscia!

The second night there we visited a restaurant not curated by an outside person on the app, but recommended nonetheless by the app makers themselves. It is called Pizzeria Da Biagio, and is located between the Parco Sempione and the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Da Vinci’s The Last Supper is. We went at 1900, right when it opened for dinner (a little different than the US), and were the first ones there. We sat in the back, and ordered some of the selections from that night’s aperitivo, which included a cheese and salami plate, a white pizza, and gnocchi fries, in addition to (several) glasses of a delicious Sicilian red wine which I neglected to write the name down for but which the charming Sicilian waiter recommended for us; actually we didn’t order anything, he recommended the whole meal, and he was spot-on! The food and wine were transcendent, pleasing every taste bud equally! It was the type of meal that leaves you with a big smile on your face afterwards.

It was not this nice when we went!

Me enjoying our meal at Pizzeria Da Biagio

The third night we went to Ciripizza, which is a small pizzeria with good reviews right at the Southern end of Chinatown. I ordered a delicious birra, and a caprissiosa pizza (what can I say? I’m a creature of habit), and my wife ordered a margherita pizza. I have to say, I was very disappointed; it was bland and unexciting. However, my wife’s margherita was absolutely delicious! I clearly made an incorrect choice. To be fair, I went back and read the review, and it specifically mentioned how good the margherita was.

Our last night there, we checked out a restaurant mentioned on the Milan & more app called Osteria delle Corti, which specializes in old-school Italian dishes and pasta (and was only 2 blocks from our hotel!). Some of the pastas on their menu include garganelli, maccheroncini (which I ordered), Capri Courts” (ravioli stuffed with scamorza cheese and buffalo) with Tomato and Basil (which my wife got), bombardoni, tortelli, etc.; truly an embarrassment of choices. We got a half bottle of Sicilian red, and a mozzarella salad for an appetizer. The food, the service, the wine, and the ambiance were so sublime that this was one of our favorite meals of all time. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough when you go.

  1. Thanks for the great culinary report. Any report of foreign travel is not complete without some food porn and I think you nailed it. Anyone who eats primarily pizza in Amerika is missing a whole lot, but in Italy, it can bu a worthy pursuit, as you have demonstrated. I’m glad to hear that Mrs. Military Military Frequent Flyer enjoyed her selections as well. Nice report!

  2. A wonderful trip report! Thanks for sharing the details and for the tip about using the stay.com app. I hadn’t heard of stay.com but plan to try it out in Europe this spring.

  3. @NoFlyZone – Actually, in Philly, we have some legit pizza (try Lorenzo’s!). Thank you, and I hope to repeat. I have trips this year scheduled to Peru, Vegas, and SE Asia!

@DeniseL – My pleasure. That app single-handedly made our trip better. Make sure to check it out when you do have an internet connection, to go through all the curated recommendations and save them to your profile!

  4. Ha, you miss out the most important part – the pricing
I wonder how much the bill is for each restaurant, or just in general how much is a pizza at each place

Thanks, will add them onto my Google Map and try to visit

  5. @Jerry – I probably could’ve added the prices, although to be honest I’m willing to spend a lot of money on good food. I will say that the prices for food in Milan were equivalent to prices in Philly, even with the currency conversion rates, but we were at pizzerias, not super nice restaurants.

  6. Thank you! I appreciate your reviews and was wondering about food prices as well, but I see you’ve answered that. We (2 adults, 2 kids) are leaving Thursday from EWR to Milan thanks to the Wideroe mistake

  7. @Kadence – Enjoy! I hope the Nor’Easter coming through doesn’t affect your travel, and that the weather there is better than when we went!
