A Year of Saving with Veterans’ Advantage

For those of you have followed my blog, you have read about my experiment with getting the Veterans Advantage card a year ago and the benefits I have received.  Scott Higgins, the president of VA, was kind enough to let me interview him about the benefits and even found that I discovered a bug in their system for rental cars which they quickly fixed.  I want to summarize my benefits below for you to see, but I have to say that I certainly got more than I had hoped for for my yearly dues. 5% Discount on United – By far the biggest benefit from membership in Veterans Advantage.  If you are reading this blog, you obviously like to travel and 5% off every ticket adds up to a lot of savings.  I applied this to other tickets I purchased also such as for my wife so the total savings is pretty high.  I purchased $5,134 in United tickets during the year equaling a savings of $257. Car Rental Discounts – I actually make quite…

Ten Tips for Frequent Flying in 2013, Part 1

Now comes the most depressing time of the year – when all your EQM totals roll back to zero!  So toast a glass to all the miles and points you accumulated during 2012 and get ready to do the ritual all over again.  To help you out, I have compiled a list of my top ten tips for achieving the status that you desire (or have thrust upon you if you are forced to travel the miles like I do).   These go in to some detail so I will list five now and the remaining five next week.  Feel free to ask for more details as I really could write a page on each one of these subjects. 1.  Plan your year.  Don’t be one of the many who are scrambling next December because they just realized that they need 2,500 miles to make Unobtainium Level on their favorite airline.  Make a simple spreadsheet which lists all your known or probable trips by month.  If you fly on multiple alliances, total them in…

Supporting the USO on Veterans’ Day

Everyone has heard of the USO, but hopefully you know it more than that group who sent Bob Hope over to entertain the troops in WW2/ Korea/ Vietnam/ Desert Storm (yes Bob went to all those conflicts)!  The United Service Organization was borne out of the various Army and Navy organizations at the start of…
